Nitrous Oxide Gci

Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous, or nos, it is a chemical compound with two nitrogen atoms and one oxygen atom with the formula N2O.

At room temperature, it is a colorless, non-flammable gas with a slightly sweet scent and taste. At elevated temperatures, nitrous oxide is a powerful oxidizer, like molecular oxygen.

Similar to hospital oxygen systems, nitrous oxide can be stored either as a cryogenic liquid or as liquid nitrous oxide in compressed gas cylinders.

USES

Nitrous oxide has significant medical uses for its anestheticand pain-reducing effects, especially in surgery and dentistry

Its use during labor is a safe and effective aid for birthing women.

Inhalation of Nitrous Oxide is used frequently to relieve pain associated with childbirth, trauma, oral surgery, and acute coronary syndrome.

SAFETY

Nitrous oxide is a significant occupational hazardfor surgeons, dentists, and nurses. Because nitrous oxide is minimally metabolized in humans (with a rate of 0.004%), it retains its potency when exhaled into the room by the patient.

It can pose an intoxicating and prolonged exposure hazard to the clinic staff if the room is poorly ventilated.

A continuous-flow fresh-air ventilation system or N₂O scavenger system prevents a waste-gas buildup where nitrous oxide is administered.
