Chemical formula
Calcium carbide is made by heating lime and coke in an electric furnace at temperatures above 2000°C (3632°F). The reaction produces calcium carbide and carbon monoxide gas: CaO + 3C → CaC2 + CO
Calcium carbide reacts with water to produce acetylene gas and calcium hydroxide: CaC2 + 2H2O → C2H2 + Ca(OH)2
Appearance: Dark grey
Form: Lumps
